I’ve never really understood patriotism until I began pledging allegiance to California, the place of my birth, and, god willing, the site of my future demise. Life, death, afterlife, oceans, mountains, highways, hotels and rock and roll…these are but a few of the spoils that hit different on this side of country. They glide past us and transfer through us in incomprehensible ways. It’s a state brimming with vortices; built on sex, gambling, and crime; harboring hangovers from a litany of spiritual sects, cults, religions, scams, and organizations. There’s something in the air. You either love it or you don’t. I haven’t examined the particulars and I don’t mean this in any xenophobic way, but I wouldn’t mind seceding from the rest of the country. And when people complain about living here I’d be happy to see them deported.
